The Scallop is a very popular Intermediate pattern done in both ballroom Rumba and Cha Cha. Below we will describe the footwork for Scallop pattern in both dances.
Gentleman's Footwork for the Scallop in Rumba - The gentleman begins by leading the first half of a basic Rumba box step, then into his side step on "slow". He then does a 2nd position step ("quick, quick"), shifting his weight side to side. As this is happening, the gentleman leads his partner into a fifth position. The gentleman's next step is with his left foot stepping behind himself on "slow", leading the lady to do a right side fan.
He then steps back on his right foot for the first "quick" of his rock step. He finishes his rock step ("quick"), then steps forward on "slow." He then does another rock step forward on his left foot (quick, quick). He stays in this foot positioning until the next "slow" and then finishes side together for the the "quick, quick."
Lady's Footwork for the Scallop in Rumba - The lady begins with the first half of a basic Rumba box step (which is back, side together) The gentleman then leads her into a fifth position. On "slow" he will begin to lead the right side fan. For the lady this is a swiveling action into the fan. The lady steps forward on her right foot ("quick," swivel), then step on her left foot ("quick," swivel). Then she steps back on her right foot for the first rock step. Completing the rock step, she keeps that foot position until the "slow" and then finishes side together for the "quick, quick".
Gentleman's Footwork for the Scallop in Cha Cha - The gentleman begins by doing the first half of a basic Cha Cha step, the count for which is "1,2,3,4, &". He does his next side step on "1", then he does a second position rock for "2, 3". He then does a locking Cha Cha step for "4, &, 1" behind himself. He then steps back on his right foot for "2", on "3" he is forward on his left and he finishes out side together for "4 & 1". Then he is back into his basic step.
Lady's Footwork for the Scallop in Cha Cha - The lady begins by doing the first half of a basic Cha Cha step, the count for which is "1,2,3,4, &". She then does a side step on "1", a fifth position on "2,3", swiveling on the "3". She then does a Cha Cha locking step forward for "4, &, 1". She rocks forward on her left foot for "2", steps back on her right foot for "3." She then does side, together, side for "4, &, 1". The she is back into her basic step.
