This pattern is a Bronze or Intermediate level pattern. In our beginning
basic Foxtrot step, movement of the couple as they danced always continued
in a forward direction. Our Quarter Turn pattern has the couple using
both forward and back motion. In Quarter Turns our floor alignment is
very important. We want to face diagonal to wall to begin our Quarter
Turns.
Gentleman Foxtrot Quarter Turn - The man starts with his left foot, his first step is forward, heel to toe action, and diagonal to the wall. His second step (right foot). follows that same line, again heel to toe action. His third step is a side step and here he employs what we call "contra body action." If the man steps with one foot and leads with the opposite side, it is called contra body action. Contra Body Action is a turning or twisting of the body toward the moving foot. On this third step, which is a side step, the man is traveling in that same diagonal-toward-the-wall direction as in his first two steps. He then closes his feet. The count is slow, slow, quick, quick.
The gentleman would then repeat the same series of steps only going backward this time. Starting with his left foot, the first step is backward and still diagonal to the wall. His second step (right foot) backward again, following the same line. His third step is a side step (this time with his left foot) and still in the diagonal wall direction. All the time using toe to heel action. Then he closes his left foot to his right. Again, the count is slow, slow, quick quick.
Lady Foxtrot Quarter Turn - She begins with her right foot and steps backward, using toe to heel action. She is moving diagonal to wall. He second step, left foot, is along the same line. This is also where she would begin to turn for her third step to the side, again in that same diagonal to wall direction as the first two steps. She then closes her left foot to her right. The count is slow, slow, quick, quick.
The Lady is now ready to repeat the same series of steps only this time going forward. Beginning with her right foot, she steps forward, this time using heel to toe action. Second step in the same direction and aligned diagonal to wall. On her third step she begins to turn, so she can take the third (side) step in that same diagonal direction. She then closes her feet.
