PUSH PULL(Hustle)

Push Pull is a non-syncopated version of the Hustle. The timing for Push Pull is "1, 2, 3, 4 . . . 1, 2, 3, 4". The "1" count is the start of the rock step, the "2" count is the replace of weight of the rock step and the "3 & 4" are two marching steps in place. We can also think of it as, "rock step, march, march. Beginning our basic, we start with what we call the Time Step.

Gentleman's Basic Time Step - The man starts on his left foot. He begins with a rock step and then does 2 marching steps in place. This is the basic Time Step for Push Pull. He repeats this step several times to keep the rhythm continuously going.

Lady's Basic Time Step - The lady's basic step is the same as the man's, except she begins on her right foot. She does a rock step and then 2 marching steps in place.

Variation - A very common and easy variation of the basic Time Step is to rotate our step. To rotate, the Gentleman starts the rock step as he normally would and then rotates to his right for the "3 & 4" count (or the march, march.) He repeats as much as he likes. The Lady follows his lead and rocks back with her right foot and rotates to her right for "3 & 4."

Underarm Turn - Another simple variation is the Underarm Turn. The Gentleman continues his basic step and swings his arm out to his left between the count of "2" and "3" to initiates the Lady's turn. Gentlemen, if doing 2 turns, you should finish your "march, march" (3 & 4) while she turns. As you start your next rock step, let her finish her next rock step before you bring her back for a second underarm turn using the same count. See more variations and the basic step on our Push Pull Video.
