Bolero is a beautiful slow dance. Coming to the United States in the mid 1930's, it is sometimes called the Cuban "Dance of Love" because of it's slow, dreamy tempo. It is similar to the Rumba in its footwork and timing and in many patterns and figures. Both dances take three steps to four beats of music and the music is in 4/4 time. But the way in which the steps are danced has a much different feeling in the Bolero. The basic step of the Bolero is a long, sweeping step to the side on the "slow" beat, followed by a rock step forward or backward on the "quick, quick" beats.
Video 1 shows the basic Bolero step for both the gentleman and the lady, and at the same time demonstrates the technique and style with which the steps should be danced. Video 2 shows the Bolero danced to music, featuring not only the basic step but patterns such as open and fifth position breaks, cross over breaks, underarm turns, hesitations and grapevine to outside fans.
