Here's an East Coast Swing step that allows the partners to break out of the standard face to face position. In the Change of Places pattern the partners face the same direction and do parallel triple steps to either side, each partner moving in the opposite direction. The pattern is lead from an open dance position (the partners holding hands in front). Our video shows how to begin in closed dance position, and the gentleman can use a "throw out" (or can use an underarm turn) to get into open dance position. Once in open position, he leads the Change of Places pattern, after any rock step.
In this pattern the gentleman's hand lead is all important. He uses a wrist action like he is turning a door knob in order to lead the lady to move in front of him for the parallel triple steps. Video 1 shows the basic Change of Places pattern, first the man's footwork, then the lady's footwork (both from closed dance position.) Video 2 (below) shows the man's wrist action hand lead and then shows the pattern done to music with two variations, the Hitch Kick and the Lady Turning.
