SEE THE DANCE DONE - FOXTROT
Albert Arredondo & Laura Draper - TC Dance Club Kansas City

Think of Foxtrot and you think of big band music, couples in elegant evening wear whirling around the ballroom floor, and no doubt Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers come to mind. Foxtrot actually has many similarities to Waltz and these two dances do share many patterns. Both are "progressive" dances, meaning they travel across the floor, along what is called the "line of dance" in a counterclockwise direction. Foxtrot uses a combination of slow steps, which use two beats of music and quick steps, which use one beat of music. The timing is usually counted as slow, slow, quick, quick. And this dance is typically done to big band swing style music written in 4/4 time.

Footwork is vital in Foxtrot. Forward walking steps use a heel lead, where the heel is first in contact with the floor and the toe lowering as the body moves over it. Backward steps are taken with the toe first, toe lead, with the heel lowering as the body moves of it. Side steps and chasses use toe leads. Rise and fall action is also present in Foxtrot, although it is more subtle than in Waltz. The video below features Advanced TC Kansas City Instructors Albert Arredondo and Laura Draper showing you just how beautiful Foxtrot is at the Silver and Gold Level.
