Foxtrot Quarter turns are a pattern that is fun to do and gives the couple another way, besides the basic step, to move around the ballroom floor. For this Foxtrot pattern, the gentleman, as the lead, needs to be especially conscious of the line of dance. The steps in Foxtrot Quarter Turns, both those steps going forward and backward, are always diagonal to the line of dance, or diagonal to wall.
It is also a great advantage if the partners are in closed dance position. The additional body contact of the closed dance position helps the gentleman lead the lady with greater accuracy, and likewise, the lady can better follow his lead as the Quarter Turn pattern, unlike the basic Foxtrot step, has gentleman and lady moving both forward and backward with their steps.
