Ballroom Tango, as we know it today, has descended from the tango styles that came about when Tango music and the Tango dance came to Europe and America. Tango, was, of course, born in Argentina. It was the music and dance that reflected the passion and desperation of Argentina's poorer working class. But when the dance migrated to the Continent and America it became simplified, it lost it's original abrasiveness and was adapted to the preferences of conventional ballroom dancers. These preferences included that Tango be danced to more "modern" music in 4/4 measure. In addition to using different music than the original Argentine tangos, modern Ballroom Tango has different steps and styling, with more grounded steps, dramatic staccato movements and the characteristic "head snaps." But the flavor and the passion of the original dance remain.
In the video below you'll see American Tango done at the Silver and Gold level.
