Stylish, elegant and graceful, all words that describe the "grande dame" of all ballroom dances, the Waltz. It is the dance of fairy tale balls, beautiful flowing gowns and perfect evenings. Danced to music in 3/4 time, the Waltz is characterized by a strong accent on the first beat, a pattern of step-step-close and graceful turns and glides. First done in the United States in the 1830's, the Waltz was then considered scandalous, because of the "closed position," in which the man and woman danced, with their bodies in close proximity. But by the mid 1800's, this beautiful dance was firmly established in American culture.
American Style Waltz, as you will see, involves breaking contact almost entirely in some figures. Also you will note Waltz is characterized by a styled and almost "haughty" dance frame, with the partners looking up and away from each other, and a slight "rise and fall" to the partners' steps. Both Video 1 and Video 2 show you what a beautiful dance the Waltz is.
