WEST COAST WHIPS
TC Dance Club Kansas City

West Coast Swing is perhaps the most improvisational of partner dances and hence can be one of the most fun. West Coast Swing is a slotted dance. The lady travels back and forth along a shoulder-width rectangle, called the slot, with respect to the leader. Imagine the dance being done on a diving board. The man, the leader, is more stationary but will move in and out of the slot (or on and off the board) depending on the pattern led. A general rule is that the man leaves the slot (or moves off the board) only to give way for the lady to pass him.

The Whip is one of the most versatile of all West Coast patterns. Video 1 shows the basic Whip pattern and the footwork for the man and the lady. Video 1 then shows additional Whip patterns, the Whip with an Inside Turn and the Whip with an Outside turn. In Video 2 we learn two additional patterns that come from the basic Whip. Those are the Continuous Lindy and the Spin Whip.
